RYTH.EXE DOS GAME
A downloadable game
We don't know much about this game.
I can't get it to run on a normal pc, as it supposedly is a 16-bit DOS game.
Running it on MS-DOS using virtualbox or vmware doesn't work either, as soon as the application starts it prints "Starting d3denv" and immediately crashes after that, leaving no error messages or warnings.
The file contains the game folder, packed with the executable and the installer.
It also comes with a binary file (possibly containing the compiled game data)
and 2 other files, "STRINGS" AND "SPLASH0".
If we open these 2 files using a text editor, we can notice it's raw data.
I managed to convert the SPLASH0 file into a PNG, and it outputs the cover of this page.
As for STRINGS, I didn't pay much attention to it, but you can clearly see some text strings embedded in the raw data by opening it with a text editor.
When I found the game, it also came with a "representation" of a map and a text file containing some information about the game.
According to that, the game starts with a poorly made main menu screen.
The title is just "ryth" on a background that fades slowly from black to a red image of ryth continuously.
The only options are "New game" and "Load game", you can navigate the menu using the arrow keys.
The first option starts the game, while the second (does a completely different thing) takes you to a different screen with "Controls" "Exit to DOS" "Return to menu".
"Controls" just freezes the game, "Exit to DOS" quits the game and "return to menu" takes you back to the previous screen.
There's also a background audio playing in the menu, which is apparently a bitcrushed and reversed song.
The game starts with the player in a room, facing a wall. The up and down arrow keys let you move forwards and backwards while the left and right arrow keys makes the player turn.
After the exploring the room, you can see a wall with
"--. --- / - --- / - .... . / --. .- .-.. .-.. . .-. -.--" written on it, which is the morse code of "GO TO THE GALLERY".
By going straight, you can see a corridor on the right and a sign that says "gallery"
